5 Fall Landscaping Reminders

November in New Jersey is a time of beautiful (albeit bittersweet) transformation as the radiant colors of summer give way to the earthy hues of fall. It’s the last chance for many months to enjoy the outdoors comfortably and consistently. That also makes it a pivotal month for your landscape. Before fall turns to winter, there are some important investments to make, essential tasks to complete, and perhaps a classic, fall-centric amenity to consider. If you follow us on social media and/or subscribe to our newsletter, you’ve probably heard these before—but it never hurts to provide timely seasonal reminders. Here’s what to prioritize for no later than the end of November.

1. Invest in Landscape Lighting

As daylight wanes in fall, landscape lighting becomes not only a practical necessity but also a key contributor to the season’s ambiance. It’s part of what makes a great fall landscape. Picture strolling through your garden after coming home from work or enjoying dinner on the patio with the soft, inviting glow of well-placed lighting.

High Tech Landscapes offers many landscape lighting options, and we’re here to assist you with your selection and special features such as timers and motion sensors. One of our lighting designers will guide you through the process and see to it that your installation goes smoothly. The result is a subtle but surprisingly noticeable addition to your scenery.

2. Respect Your Neighbors

When it comes to hosting, fall is every bit as much of an outdoor season as summer. However, it’s a much quieter time, especially since nightfall settles in much sooner. If you’re having friends and family over for those college football Saturdays and Sunday fundays, it’s courteous to enclose your yard to a reasonable extent to help keep any noise to a minimum—and you probably prefer at least some privacy anyway. That doesn’t mean you need to put up a fence, though. There are so many creative ways to use plants to create privacy. Get a few ideas here and take advantage of the fact that fall is the ideal time for new plantings, thanks to the milder weather.

3. Spring Starts Now

Hah! We wish! If only we could skip straight from fall to spring, we wouldn’t have to endure winter. But wait, there is a slight loophole that allows you to think spring even in November. While fall is a season of change, it’s also a season of preparation. There’s still time, although limited, to get spring plantings in the ground before winter’s chill sets in. Consider planting bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. These hardy perennials will lay dormant over winter and burst with bright colors when spring arrives. Meanwhile, you can gain some instant gratification by decorating your landscape with your favorite potted fall annuals.

4. A Fire Pit Is Perfect for Fall

Earlier, we alluded to a classic, fall-centric amenity you might want to consider. That amenity is none other than a fire pit. What better way to bring the much-needed element of warmth to your fall outdoor hosting? High Tech Landscapes specializes in building various types of fire features, including propane fire pits, brick fire pits, wood fire pits, custom fireplaces, and more. To decide which one suits your space and style, start with the basics and compare a wood vs. gas fire pit. Need more convincing? See our five reasons to get a fire pit for fall.

5. Don’t Forget to Winterize

True winter prep is crucial for enjoying a lush, healthy lawn in spring and summer. Core aeration and overseeding are the key practices to effectively winterize your lawn. Core aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow nutrients, water, and air to penetrate deeply, encouraging robust root growth. Overseeding complements this process by introducing new grass seed to fill in sparse areas and promote a thick, luxurious lawn. High Tech provides these services along with any others you choose to add to your custom lawn and plant care program.
