Have a Staycation in Your Backyard

Everyone loves the idea of a summer getaway, but finding one isn’t always so easy. Between the prices, crowds and getting time off from work, your summer vacation may be more stressful than it’s worth.

Why not embrace summer in all its glory from the comfort of your own home? We’re talking about your backyard, which can make for a beautiful staycation with minimal effort required.

Summer Colors
A vacation is all about enjoying your surroundings, and the same holds true for a staycation. Enliven your outdoor space with plants that bloom through summer. Petunias bring bright pops of pink and magenta, while sea holly adds cool blue and violet. Don’t forget brown-eyed Susans and marigolds for eye-catching shades of yellow and orange.

Watering in Extreme Heat
Your plants need a little extra love during the notorious summer heat waves that grip the Mid-Atlantic. Think of it this way: plants lose water faster in heat, just like you do. Summer watering entails watering your plants slowly and deeply so that the roots collect more. You might also add an extra watering to your usual weekly routine, but don’t overdo it. The best test to see if your plants need more water is to feel the topsoil and wait until it’s dry to the touch before the next watering.

Keeping Bugs at Bay
Have you ever come home from a wonderful day in the summer sun, only to find yourself covered in mosquito bites? Talk about a buzzkill. Annoyance aside, mosquitoes are known disease carriers, as are ticks. New Jersey, in fact, has one of the highest rates of Lyme disease (commonly carried by ticks) in the U.S. Protect yourself and your family (and don’t forget, your pets!) during your staycation by implementing an ongoing insect control program.

The Backyard BBQ
The great thing about a staycation is that you can easily invite the people you love. Family, friends and coworkers might not be able to hop a flight to Bermuda with you…but coming over for a Sunday BBQ is a no-brainer.
