Paperbark Maple

The paperbark maple is one of the most graceful trees you will find. As it ages, its bark peels like paper—thus the name—to reveal fresh new bark. It’s as if the tree is forever young.

Classified scientifically as Acer griseum, this medium-sized maple is native to China and began to gain popularity in North America in the early 20th century. Paperbark maple holds a distinct beauty in winter, thanks to its rustic-colored bark. Of course, that is after a brilliant display of deep scarlet and/or burnt orange leaves in fall. Plant paperbark maple in full to partial sun and slightly acidic soil. It will not take much, other than time, to grow this ornamental tree to its maximum height of 25-30 feet.
